The Population Surveillance platform was established in 2000 to monitor HIV prevalence and incidence. Activities include household surveillance, verbal autopsy surveillance and individual health surveillance.

In recent years activities have expanded to include oversight of field-based data collection for all population-based studies, a data centre which records and archive data for all research projects, and a community engagement unit.
