Health care evaluation; primary health care; HIV, tuberculosis and chronic non-communicable diseases

Max Is an academic public health physician interested in how to improve and evaluate the quality of health care. He is South African and has worked in both South Africa and the UK for over 20 years.   He was Head of the Department of Community Health in the University of the Free State Medical School before taking up his present position at the Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia (UEA), where he is Head of the Department of Population Health and Primary Care. He is Honorary Professor at the University of Cape Town Medical School, and Research Fellow at the University of Cape Town Lung Institute, attached to its Knowledge Translation Unit.

His research is mostly focused on innovation, integration and evaluation of primary health care for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, respiratory disease, diabetes, cancer, and other long term conditions. This is mostly implementation research, looking at how to get evidence into practice through complex interventions aimed at changing professional and organisational behaviour, for example using education and clinical practice guidelines.  Engagement with government health services and policy makers is crucial, so as to strengthen health services on a large scale and so improve population health. For example the STRETCH trial underpins South Africa's policy of nurse initiation and monitoring of antiretroviral treatment. Max's research is mostly in clinical epidemiology, especially randomised trials, quasi-experiments and patient cohort studies, and causal inference and effectiveness estimation from observational studies. He also is experienced in health economic and interdisciplinary research in health care.
